Infectious Disease & Contamination Control for Law Enforcement

Course Overview

The dangers law enforcement officers face don’t always come from the barrel of a gun or the blade of a knife. Invisible threats—infectious diseases, chemical residues, and trace contaminants—pose risks just as lethal, but often overlooked.

This groundbreaking training from E. G. Weiss & Associates, led by nationally recognized instructor E. G. Weiss, brings officers face-to-face with the unseen hazards of today’s policing environment. From infectious pathogens to fentanyl particles that can silently transfer from evidence to uniforms, vehicles, and even officers’ homes, this program delivers practical strategies to stay protected on and off duty.

What You Will Learn

In just one session, participants will gain the skills and confidence to:

  • Identify infectious disease threats in field and custody settings.

  • Apply proper PPE use and contamination control measures in real-world situations.

  • Recognize and respond to emerging hazards such as fentanyl, bloodborne pathogens, and other high-risk contaminants.

  • Prevent cross-contamination from the crime scene to patrol cars, stations, and homes.

  • Integrate safety practices that protect not only the officer but also their families and communities.

Crime Scene Situational Awareness & Evidence Preservation for First Responders

Course Overview

This one-hour on-demand training equips EMS, fire, and law enforcement personnel with the knowledge and skills to recognize, preserve, and protect potential crime scenes. Too often, first responders unintentionally damage or destroy critical evidence in the rush to save lives. This course challenges students to slow down, see more, and act deliberately.

Students will learn the fundamentals of situational awareness, including Endsley’s three-level model, and apply it to real-world responses such as fires, accidents, suspicious deaths, robberies, and burglaries. Practical best practices are explored in detail, from PPE use (gloves, boot covers, masks) to photographing scenes, documenting responder presence, and preventing contamination of evidence such as cartridge casings, footprints, and DNA.

The course also examines national statistics and case studies of evidence contamination, providing context and urgency for improving responder discipline. By the end of the course, participants will understand their role not just as lifesavers but as the first guardians of justice.

What You Will Learn

  • Contamination & Cross-Contamination Awareness: Recognize how easily evidence can be altered, destroyed, or transferred, and learn methods to prevent it.

  • Scene Integrity Protocols: Apply step-by-step practices to preserve fragile evidence while keeping responder and victim safety a priority.

  • Immediate Documentation: Capture critical details through notes and photography before the scene changes or evidence is disturbed.

  • Situational Awareness: Use Endsley’s three-level model to “read the room,” anticipate threats to evidence, and act deliberately.

  • Active Observation & Listening: Strengthen your ability to notice, retain, and report key details that support investigators later.

  • Responder Accountability: Understand the importance of documenting everyone on scene so investigators can eliminate innocent DNA, footprints, and prints.

  • Interagency Cooperation: Support detectives, crime scene units, and investigators by delivering a scene that maintains the highest evidentiary value possible.

Neurodivergent Awareness for First Responders: Understanding and Responding with Confidence

Course Overview

This 90 minute training introduces first responders to the fundamentals of neurodivergence, including autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, Tourette syndrome, dyslexia, and other common conditions. Participants will gain an understanding of who neurodivergent individuals are, the prevalence of these conditions, and the ways in which sensory, communication, and behavioral differences may present during emergency situations.

Special emphasis will be placed on identifying common triggers—such as loud sirens, confined spaces, flashing lights, or sudden physical contact—that may escalate a scene when dealing with neurodivergent individuals. Real-world strategies will be provided for law enforcement, EMS, and fire responders, including transportation considerations in patrol vehicles or ambulances where noise, radios, or darkness may cause distress.

By the end of the course, responders will be equipped with the awareness and practical tools to approach neurodivergent individuals with greater safety, empathy, and effectiveness, reducing the risk of escalation and improving outcomes for all parties.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this 90-minute course, participants will be able to:

1. Define neurodivergence and identify at least five common neurodivergent conditions relevant to first responder encounters.

2. Recognize behavioral and communication traits that may indicate an individual is neurodivergent, distinguishing them from non-compliance, intoxication, or other medical conditions.

3. Identify common environmental and sensory triggers (such as lights, sirens, radios, physical touch, and confinement) that may escalate distress during emergency interactions.

4. Apply practical de-escalation strategies tailored for neurodivergent individuals in high-stress emergency scenes.

5. Demonstrate effective communication techniques to reduce misunderstandings and improve cooperation, including working with caregivers or support persons.

6. Implement transport and custody considerations to minimize risk and discomfort when placing neurodivergent individuals in patrol cars, ambulances, or other confined spaces.

7. Evaluate case study scenarios to determine best practices and lessons learned for improved safety, empathy, and operational outcomes.
